FUNAKOSHI Katsura (1950- ) has been producing human half-length statues out of camphor wood since around 1980. While extending his works to other forms such as sphynx or humans in irregular appearances, he says his interest never veers to subjects other than human beings. As he says “it may be possible to represent the ‘formation of the world’ through the form of a human being”, it can be mentioned that his artistic activity is an attempt to express the universal spirituality of people, which exceeds cultural and historical contexts.
